Scarlet runner beans
Scarlet runner beans
One of Jess' favorite flowers to grow in the vegetable garden are scarlet runner beans. They bloom profusely, attracting both hummingbirds and bees. Scarlet flowers against green, heart-shaped foliage.
These are super rapid climbers. Beans are edible and delicious when young. Keep pods picked for continuous bloom.
The seeds themselves are pretty stunning as well, they're black, streaked with purple (when dried). Beans and whole pods are edible.
Grow Scarlet Runner Beans up a tall, strong trellis, and it will reach 3m (10') or higher by mid-summer. Looks amazing over an arch trellis. Or up a giant teepee trellis!
