Joy's Midnight Chard is everything to love in a plant: it's gorgeous, delicious and easy to grow in our climate. We first debuted this beautifully dark chard in 2024 and there is no going back! Use Joy's Midnight Chard like you would any swiss chard: in a salad, pesto, or braised.
Expect the same classic chard flavor, good tolerance to cold and wet conditions. Both color and flavor intensify as plants mature; baby leaves are milder to both the eye and taste buds. Unique to this variety, are the dark burgandy leaves with almost luminescent yellow-orange midribs (shoutout to Adaptive Seeds). We do love ourselves a unique, standout beauty. Beauty + flavor is the jam here.
Favorite plant color combos:
- Joy's Midnight Chard + Cardinal Basil
- Joy's Midnight Chard + Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye Tomato
- Joy's Midnight Chard + Buena Mulata Pepper
Joy's Midnight Chard grows to 20" tall and 18" wide. It prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade in the summer. Mulch at the base of the plant to shade out weeds and ensure good soil moisture. Great for containers or mixed in amongst your natives and ornamentals.
