Tomato, San Marzano
Tomato, San Marzano
San Marzano is basically the Ferrari or Prada of canned tomato varieties. If you're a canner, you obviously already know this. This paste-type fruit is beautiful, bright red in color, elongated in shape and weighs about 5 ounces on average. These tomatoes are famed for their balanced flavor that combines sweetness, tomato-ey intensity and just the right amount of acid. It also grows really well in our climate and is PROLIFIC.
Tomatoes love full sun and well-draining, fertile soil. Add some worm castings or compost to the planting hole to help reduce transplant shock - we like to plant our tomatoes deeply, like all the way to the first set of bottom leaves. Doing this will encourage more roots to grow along the stem, giving you an even stronger root system and happier plant. Mulch at the base of plants to help retain soil moisture throughout the growing season. Staking is a must!
