This beautiful, buttery and speckled romaine lettuce originated in Austria, back in the late 1700's. In Germany, it was named forellenschluss, meaning: "trout's back." Trout are fish covered in beautiful spots, reminiscent of the striking red freckles on this otherwise green romaine lettuce. According to the Slow Food Ark of Taste, forellenschluss came to North America in the 1790s, first arriving in Waterloo County, Ontario.
We have grown this beautiful romaine in our own gardens for years and its hardy, sweet, buttery and beautiful. Heads grow 6-12" tall and wide. Great for cutting and come again - meaning you can make repeated cuttings and it keeps growing!
Favorite Plant Color Combos:
- Speckled Trout Romaine + Thai Lemon Basil
- Speckled Trout Romaine + Shishito Pepper
- Speckled Trout Romaine + Cardinal Basil
Lettuce prefers full sun and fertile, well‐drained soil. Mix 1‐3” of compost into planting area. In the peak of summer, your lettuce will need a little shade relief during the hottest parts of the day - plant your lettuce next to crops that can provide much needed afternoon shade due to their taller stature. Mulching at the base of plants will help retain soil moisture. Great for containers!
