Holy Basil (Tulsi) is native to India, where it has been a part of the culture since the ancient times, known as "Queen of Herbs." It is considered an adaptogenic herb, with the ability to increase the body's resistance to stress and disease.
There are many varieties of Holy Basil / Tulsi, this is Temperate Tulsi or Sacred Basil (Ocimum africanum).

Tulsi is one of the best herbs to grow for tea.  It's been called "Nature's Bubblegum".  The flavor is a little fruity with an accent of clove and vanilla, making it seem slightly sweet.  Jess drinks iced tulsi tea almost daily in the summer, often replacing the "typical" black iced tea.  It's also delicious and calming in a hot tea, paired with other herbs or with a drizzle of raw honey (if you've got a sweet tooth like Kristen).

Plants reach 12-24" in height and can be grown in pots, in the ground or raised beds.  Harvest the leaves and flowers often, and pinch back blossoms to encourage more vigorous growth.  This particular strain is more cool-weather tolerant than sweet basil.  Pollinators love it!

Grow as you would any other basil: full sun, rich soil with good drainage, and regular moisture (mulching at the base of the plant to ensure soil moisture all season).

  • Days to Harvest: 50 - 60
  • Companion Plants: Calendula, Cilantro, Peppers, Tomatillos, Tomatoes
  • Open-Pollinated (OP)
